Join CCI in celebrating Earth Day 2021
“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of a difference you want to make.” — Jane Goodall
Each year on April 22, Earth Day is observed worldwide to raise awareness of pollution while also celebrating the planet’s environment. Rallies, outdoor projects, community service, and ecological conferences are held around the world. Many use Earth Day as a time to reflect on how their decisions and actions affect the planet. Some will consider lifestyle changes to reduce their carbon footprint, others may try to find ways to use less water, and many will search for environmentally friendly products to use in their workplaces and homes. Earth Day is an important reminder of the impact human actions have on the planet while offering the opportunity to live happier and healthier in harmony with nature’s plants, animals, and natural resources.
What initially began as a grassroots movement, soon became a widely recognized day of environmentalism. The observance of Earth Day fostered public support for the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency. Earth Day observation also contributed to the passage of several laws and acts such as the Water Quality Improvement Act, the Clean Air Act, and the Endangered Species Act. Proposed by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, the inaugural Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970. Over 20 million Americans celebrated the first holiday, and by 1990 Earth Day was worldly recognized by more than 200 million people in 141 countries.
